Genocide Memorials: In Rwanda, there are Memorials to remember the genocide of 1994 throughout the nation. The most important Genocide Memorials are those of Kigali (Gisozi) and Murambi (Gikongoro) where the history of the genocide is explained. Dian Fossey’s grave is at the Karisoke Research Centre on the slopes of the Bisoke Volcano where she carried out her studies on the mountain gorillas for 18 years. She was murdered on the 27th of December 1985 at the Karisoke Research Center and buried near Digit, her favorite gorilla. The excursion will provide excellent background information on Fossey’s life and work, while traversing the forest where Fossey did her work.

The golden monkeys are an indigenous species found exclusively in the Virunga Conservation Area. They have been well habituated over the years and there are 2 major troops to visit. The Kabatwa troop is located not far from the Park headquarters and the Musanga troop lives near the Karisimbi and can be reached via a longer walk. This is yet another primate experience with excellent photo opportunities!

Mt. Bisoke rises 3,711 meters above the lush surrounding landscape. The hike goes through the rainforest to the glistening Crater Lake at its top, the largest Crater Lake in the Virunga mountain chain. Superlative views of the adjoining mountains await those who take on this fun, challenging hike!
